A growing number of firms are opening their innovation boundaries by actively soliciting the help of external entities. Our research examines the emerging practice of external problem solving (EPS) and explores the reasons why some solvers are more successful than others. Our research is grounded in dual processing theory and examines the impact of two different problem-solving routines (creative and deliberate) on EPS success. Results indicate that deliberate and creative routines are both effective problem-solving techniques. However, their relative effectiveness depends upon solvers' degree of contextual familiarity with the problem and the amount of time they invest in the solution. Moreover, when solvers attempt to use both routines, it reduces their overall solving success.
