"To Build or Break Away? The Cultural Shaping of Nanotechnology Innovation Within and Across Categories"

Understanding innovation is an important pursuit for scholars of strategy, organizations, and entrepreneurship. One important distinction in this context is the type of innovation an actor pursues; do they incrementally improve extant offerings, or do they shift focus and pursue opportunities in new domains? Exploring this question in the context of nanotube technology – a key area of nanotech – I argue that cultural factors play a central role. Building on studies which show that categories can cluster together in institutional space, I show that the type of innovation which inventors pursued was shaped by the relational composition of the nanotube category system. Based on the activities of star scientists, the category system became structured around categories that shared bits of similar knowledge. Inventors in these categories were significantly more likely to pursue innovation opportunities in new technology categories. Inventors in distant categories tended to stay within their home category and innovate incrementally. Further, I find that explanations based on economic factors, actor status, and social networks only hold sway when considered in tandem with category structure.
