China's hidden revenues

  • China's hidden revenues, Février 2011
The concept of "middle class" is vague, but it is generally linked to annual revenue and assets. In China, the problem with available data on purchasing power is its reliability: a large amount of income remains "off record". A recent report, Analyzing Chinese Grey Income, written for the account of the Crédit Suisse explains, among other things, that Chinese real revenue would not be of 13.3 trillion Renminbi, as official data suggests, but more so of 23 trillion (that is 15% of China's GDP). Moreover, this mass of additional income is aggravating the social divide and contributing to an increase of inequalitites.
