China's thirst

  • China's thirst, Juin 2011
Water is a problem as old as China. Drought and floods have always been a concern. But for ten years now, the water crisis as we know it today, has gotten considerably worse. In addition to fundamental problems (the Chinese agricultural model, poor water management, pollution, etc.), the dry weather has meant that certain areas hadn't seen rain in over six months before the floods. The very severe impact of the drought has revived the political debate over the country’s big energy and water projects: for the first time, the government has recognized that the Three Gorges Damn has caused significant problems. The South-North Water Transfer project is, however, becoming increasingly urgent. But despite the efforts of the government, the largest population in the world will always be lacking water.
